Walter E. Berdon Award for Best Clinical Research Paper, Society for Pediatric Radiology (2007, for the 2006 neonatal CT study)

About

I-Chen Tsai is a radiologist in Taiwan, board-certified since 2006. He built his expertise by producing clinical evidence himself: at Taichung Veterans General Hospital he built the cardiovascular CT service, including neonatal cardiac CT, and published its studies; from 2011 to 2013 he headed medical imaging at two Show Chwan hospitals.

He also turned what he learned into steps others could follow: review articles that take CT evaluation from protocol to interpretation, and, as moderator of the Asian Society of Cardiovascular Imaging’s first appropriateness criteria, an adapted rating method and format that a second expert followed to complete the companion guideline.

Since 2014 he has used the same ability for clinical research, in workshops that take physicians from a clinical question to publication. Each workshop is built around an assigned published paper and a workflow limited to tools a beginner can master, revised cohort by cohort from where participants get stuck; his meta-analysis and network meta-analysis workshops now use papers he wrote himself.

Research and how the field uses it

  1. Neonatal and congenital heart disease CT

A 2026 American Heart Association Scientific Statement and a 2025 American Association for Thoracic Surgery expert consensus cite the ASCI pediatric cardiothoracic CT guideline he co-authored (2021), which cites his 2006 study; the guideline’s 2019 part cites the 2006 study, the 2007 neonatal coronary artery study, and the 2008 technique review. The 2006 study, of which he is corresponding author, received the Society for Pediatric Radiology’s Walter E. Berdon Award for Best Clinical Research Paper.

  2. Prosthetic heart valves

His 2009 study is cited twice in the CT acquisition guidance of the 2025 expert consensus on cardiac CT for prosthetic heart valve assessment, issued by seven societies including the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, the American College of Cardiology, and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA); it is also cited in the 2018 EANM recommendations and is one of four key references for an indication rated appropriate in the Korean guideline on the appropriate use of cardiac CT (2014, 2015). The same study received an honorable mention for the 2009 Philips CT NetForum Publication of the Year, and an RSNA 2010 education exhibit he co-authored on the subject received a Certificate of Merit.

  3. Asian Society of Cardiovascular Imaging guidelines

The pediatric cardiothoracic CT guideline he co-authored (2019, 2021) is cited by the 2026 American Heart Association and 2025 American Association for Thoracic Surgery documents above. He was moderator and first author of the Society’s first appropriateness criteria, for cardiac CT (2010): he adapted the standard rating method of the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the RAND/UCLA tradition to Asian practice and set the format. ASCI’s 2017 multimodality criteria list the CT criteria among the eight existing guidelines selected for adaptation, the Korean guideline on the appropriate use of cardiac CT (2014, 2015) chose them as one of the two guidelines it adapted, and the companion cardiac MR criteria state that they “were developed through the same process.” He has served as consultant to the ASCI Congenital Heart Disease Study Group since 2011.

  4. Systematic reviews and network meta-analyses

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) Guideline No. 345, Primary Dysmenorrhea (2025), cites the 2024 network meta-analysis twice before its recommendation on exercise, the second time as its only source for advice to consider “the woman’s personal preference for exercise type”; the 2024 guideline of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society for Integrative Oncology on fatigue in adult survivors of cancer cites the coenzyme Q10 meta-analysis as background. His first-author papers of 2021, 2022, and 2024 are the assigned papers of his meta-analysis and network meta-analysis workshops.

  5. Comprehensive CT evaluation reviews

StatPearls, on the National Library of Medicine’s NCBI Bookshelf, cites the May-Thurner paper, and the European Paediatric Pulmonary Vascular Disease Network consensus statement on pediatric pulmonary hypertension (2016) cites the pulmonary hypertension review as the only reference in its paragraph on chest CT and CT angiography. The reviews, in AJR and the International Journal of Cardiovascular Imaging, take CT evaluation from protocol to interpretation for ischemic heart disease, renal hypertension, pulmonary embolism, hemodialysis access, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary hypertension, and May-Thurner syndrome (the prosthetic valve review is listed above); an RSNA 2010 education exhibit he co-authored on pulmonary hypertension received a Certificate of Merit.
